When Dr. Tim Waack called me to book this family fishing charter, he told me he liked the idea of fishing with light tackle. He was bringing his adult children and their husbands with him. They all wanted to feel something big tug on the line. They chose the 6 hour bottom and reef fishing charter. It was the right mix of fishing and riding without spending the entire day on the gulf.
We headed out Monday morning, May 11 to a beautiful day. The seas were finally calm and the weather was partly cloudy with a 20 percent chance of rain. We rode for about 1 1/2 hours offshore to get to an area that we have not reef fished in over a month. One of the keys to our success, is not going to the same reef frequently. This gives the fish a break and does not make them become finicky.
Dr. Waack brought his son Matt along with him and Matt's wife Ashley caught the biggest fish. She caught a nice 30 pound Cobia that required everyone to reel up and get out of the way while she fought this monster of a gamefish. The Cobia was beautiful. They decided to harvest the fish to help feed their large group waiting on them back in Fort Morgan. Matt did catch a nice Amberjack but had to release him.
Brian and Chris, are the son in laws on this trip and they had some fun wrangling some nice fish on light tackle. Heidi who is from a country near Finland got to catch her first saltwater fish. She caught a Bonita and a Red Snapper.
